Ebooks — Kindle — How’s That Going?

Good Morning,

I thought I would pass on a link to an article (from USA TODAY) about ebooks, which I read this morning after finding the link on another group I’m on.

Article About Ebooks & Kindle — http://www.usatoday.com/tech/products/2008-04-04-kindle-ebook-market_N.htm?csp=34

There are some things that I found interesting in the article.

#1. According to the article, Kindle and the media attention it has gained since its release, has created interest in ebooks which seems to extend beyond the Kindle but also to have impact on sales of Sony ebooks.

Black Velvet Seductions does not offer either Kindle or Sony ebooks on our site, but our books are available in both formats. Fictionwise sells both Kindle and Sony versions of our books and Amazon sells Kindle versions.

#2. Interesting sales figures are cited for ebooks. According to the article, sales of ebooks have risen dramatically from about 6 million in 2002 to about 33 million in 2007. According to the article the sales figures do not include the sales of many small publishers or the purchases of many library systems which have added ebooks to their purchases.

I find this interesting as small publishers would likely include BVS as well as most of the other largely ebook publishers which publish romance. As we know from the lists we participate in, the sales figures we receive from Fictionwise and ARe, and the sales from our own site, the romance readers are big consumers of books in general. Though there has always been some resistance to ebooks for some romance readers, I see more and more romance readers turning to ebooks. For many paper still seems to be the preferred reading medium, but many are also reading ebooks, particularly in those cases where a paper version is not available.

Anyway, it was an interesting article, and one I thought authors who are published in ebook as well as paperback (as all Black Velvet Seductions authors are) would find interesting.
