Author Island Chat Thursday May 29, 2008

Posted in Chat Opportunity at 8:11 pm by laurie979

Hi Laurie,
Just wanted to let you know about AuthorIsland.com’s all day chat tomorrow, so you can let your authors know – they are very welcome to stop by to chat and share their excerpts and offer giveaways.
See details below and let me know if you have any questions.
DeNita
Our next all day book chat is scheduled for tomorrow from 10 am to 7pm EST – and like most all day chats, it will probably be going on much later than that !
You are all invited to stop by with excerpts, news, giveaways or just to chat with some readers.  There’s no set schedule, so you can pop in anytime you’d like for as long as you’d like, but I do ask that if you offer a giveaway, please don’t pull your winners until after the chat is over.  This will give all readers the time to enter, because some will be joining in later than others.  The best thing to do is to post your contest/giveaway in an email early in the day then again later in the afternoon or early evening.  The address to use for any contests or to post your excerpts and news is authorislandchat@yahoogroups.com and to make sure you are signed up for the chat, go to http://groups. yahoo.com/ subscribe/ authorislandchat.
The chat is also a good place to let readers know you have a newsletter and give them information about how to sign up.
We’ll also be sharing quick and easy summer meal ideas and recipes, so if you want to post any of those, be sure to include your name and website under it, so when it’s posted on our recipe blog, it will have a link to your website right with it.

Contest Anyone?

Posted in Uncategorized at 3:00 pm by laurie979

Hi Guys,

As you are probably all aware Black Velvet Seductions signed with Author Island last month as a publisher associate.

Our association there entitles us to listing of all of our books on the site, to mention in newsletters, and to having a contest listed each month at Author Island.

As you may or may not be aware we have had the Black Velvet Seductions Birthday Bash going on through Author Island throughout the month of May. The contest has brought a number of new visitors to our site to check out our books. Many of the visitors have bought books or signed up to receive our free newsletters, which gives us the opportunity to gently remind them of our books again and again…which tends to eventually result in sales. Our association with Author Island thus far has been generally a very positive one and so is something we plan to continue at least as long as we see value from it.

The intent of our membership at Author Island is for the membership to benefit all Black Velvet Seductions authors. With that in mind, I am trying to put together additional contests to be promoted through Author Island and I want to spread that availability around so that it is available to any author who would like to take advantage.

The author Island promotion of the contest is important as they have quite a bit of traffic…and so having a contest listed there can mean additional traffic to author sites or to the BVS site or BVS blog site.

I am accepting contest proposals to fill upcoming openings for our contest spot at Author Island. If you have an idea for a contest we could do either as a group, or that you could do individually please send your proposals to me.

Contest ideas anyone? Please share them. 🙂

A Good Yahoo Group for Promo Tips

Posted in Useful Book Promo Groups at 10:27 am by laurie979

Hi All,

As most of you know I spend quite a bit of time scouring around looking for new ways to promote our books. Recently I subscribed to a Yahoo Group focused on book promotion. I am passing the link on because I think it is a useful group with a lot of useful tips. Today’s post on small talk is a goodie.

Check it out here:

http://groups.yahoo.com/group/promoteyourwriting/

You will probably have to join the group to read the messages. It’s a very small traffic list with only a post or two a week.

What to Say When You’ve Already Said It All

Posted in Promo Tips at 8:41 pm by laurie979

Day before yesterday I posted a list of Yahoo Groups where authors can promote their books on specific days of the week.

But I know that some of you will read the list and think, yeah, it’s a good idea to send out a promo or two each day, that’s something I could easily do. But then other things will kick in. You will think about all the other promos you’ve sent to that list and others, and your doubts will begin to grow as you think about the stale, used quality of your promo pieces, which by this time have been posted on every romance group online.

You might at this point begin to feel that sending out the same old promo to the same old groups is pointless…and you might even wonder why you should bother. I think any of us who have been faced with the task of promoting have been faced with these feelings…and I expect most of us have at one time or another felt their paralyzing effect.

Here are some thoughts for those days when you just don’t feel like you can force yourself to send another dull promo post.

First of all, realize that on most groups, only a small percentage of list members are actively reading at any one time. So even though you may have posted your promo piece a half a dozen times. and although it feels stale as week old bread to you,  it’s likely that it will be news to a good portion of the list members you are sending it to. I can’t tell you how often I get emails telling me someone just found out about our newsletter contest. We’ve been holding a contest for a long time…but every time I post an announcement of unclaimed prizes we get another big surge in newsletter subscriptions. So…just because your promo feels old and stale to you, doesn’t mean it is to your reader.

If you’ve read the above and you still feel like you still can’t inflict the same promo onto the list again…then look at your book through a different lens. Find a new angle. Post as one of the main characters, or if you have a quirky secondary character post as that character. Find a unique angle.

Not all book promotions have to include the book blurb and an excerpt. In fact, a lot of really effective ones don’t. Did you do research for your book? What interesting tidbits can you share? Write that up in a post. That can even be a series of posts as you can share different interesting things you learned when you researched the book. Be sure you include your (author) name, the book’s title, a one sentence blurb, and a link where the book can be purchased.

Questions are really effective as subject lines. If you can turn your title or subject line into a question it will have a greater chance of being read.  Unclaimed Prizes is less strong than Many Unclaimed Prizes — Is Your Name on Our List?

You don’t necessarily have to promote your book to promote your book. You can promote something your publisher is doing, something your writing group is doing, or a fellow author’s book and be promoting yours at the same time. Be sure your book title, 1 sentence blurb, and link to buy your book is included in your signature. One of my more successful posts was to a quilt group that I belong to. It’s an active group and most members read their email…and many click through links to see quilt pictures…so clicking through to see BVS books wasn’t a big jump. We sold several books to people whose email addresses I recognized from the list…and I hadn’t really even set out to promote. I would have written the same email with or without the signature line.

Occasionally promote something OTHER than your book. Promote another author’s book that you’ve enjoyed. Promote the blog contest at Black Velvet Seductions. Promote the Free Book Fridays Newsletter drawing. Promote an upcoming guest blogger we will be hosting on the blog.

The bottom line, most important thing, is to show up…and to keep showing up. When you show up, even if it isn’t to pitch your book, members of a group notice…and if your 1 sentence blurb and link is in your signature they are reminded of your book each time you post…even if your post isn’t a direct pitch.

Promotion isn’t a one off thing that you do. It is an ongoing thing that you do and do and keep doing. It often takes a lot of repetitions to move people to action…so be patient…and continue to supply the repetitions.

Yahoo Groups — List for Each Day of the Week

Posted in Promotional Links and Contacts at 7:50 pm by laurie979

Hello Everyone,

I’ve been scrambling 🙂 Don’t everyone ask what’s new at once now! 🙂

Someone emailed me asking for a list of what they could do to promote their book, as they are new to promoting on the internet.

I thought I would post the list of Yahoo Groups that accept promos on differing days of the week. Some of you who have been published with Black Velvet Seductions for awhile have received the list before. Others who are more recently published have not received the list before, so it will be new to you.

It’s a handy list to have as it gives you something quick and easy that you can do to promote your book every day of every week.

As a bit of an interesting side-note. A few weeks ago I changed the sign up forms for several of the freebies we have on the Black Velvet Seductions site…including our newsletter…our freebies list and our birthday club so that the form now asks how the subscriber learned about Black Velvet Seductions. There are a lot of people who say that they heard about us through a Yahoo Group.

If you’re wondering why we care why people signing up to receive freebies learned about us, the answer is simple. Because, when they sign up to receive our newsletters, or our freebies packages, or something on their birthday they are giving us permission to contact them, and when we contact them after they have given us permission we get more of their time and their attention…and this results in them paying attention longer and remembering more of our marketing message, which results in more sales.

Here is the list of Yahoo Groups where you can promote your book on specific days.

Promo Only

You must be a member of the group to post. Join at the link below.

http://groups.yahoo.com/group/PromoOnly/

You may promote your books, chats, reviews, etc. However, you must do it in the specified format outlined below.

Posts MUST be designated as to their content. USE the following list in the SUBJECT line of your post.

AUTHORS NEW RELEASE – AUTHOR’S NAME – BOOK TITLE – Use this to promote your new book. Be sure to give a release date, publishers website and/or a DIRECT link to the buy page. Don’t give a link to your publishers home page and make the readers search for it. Most will get frustrated and move on without buying. Take a moment and link DIRECTLY to your buy page. A cover and blurb are expected in your promotion but keep Excerpts short and sweet.

Ex: AUTHOR’S NEW RELEASE – MORGAN HAWKE – NIGHT TRAIN

AUTHOR CONTEST – AUTHOR’S NAME – Use this for your own, Author related contests. Make sure to give as MUCH details as possible and a link to your website. You may also want to think about giving direct links to your contest page.

Ex: AUTHOR’S CONTEST – LADY BLADE

AUTHORS NEW REVIEW – AUTHOR’S NAME – BOOK TITLE – Use this to promote a new review for your book. Make sure to include all the standard information and give proper credit to the reviewer/review site. Make sure to include a link to the FULL review, so readers, publishers and/or other Authors, can read the entire thing at their leisure. Also make sure to include a direct link to your books BUY page. Not the Publishers site. As I said above, most will get frustrated if they have to search for it and move on without buying your work.

Ex: AUTHOR’S NEW REVIEW – MADISON FOXE – THE INNOCENT

AUTHOR REVIEWS – AUTHOR’S NAME – BOOK TITLE – Use this to list all your current reviews. You don’t need to post these everyday, but once a week, once every other week, is enough to remind, inform the readers that you do have a back list they may wish to check out. Be sure to include DIRECT links to your Buy Pages in the email. Again, if readers are interested and have to search for it, they will give up and move on. It’s perfectly acceptable to put your publishers site up as well, but if you’re speaking about a single book, make sure the Buy link is in there somewhere.

Ex: AUTHOR REVIEWS – SHIRLEY MARTIN – NIGHT SECRETS

AUTHOR CHAT – AUTHOR’S NAME – SITE WHERE EVENT WILL TAKE PLACE – This should be posted on THE DAY OF THE CHAT ONLY. You should post it twice during that day. Once in the morning and once closer to chat time. That way you catch both “crowds” and give them a friendly reminder to come meet you.

Ex: AUTHOR CHAT – RAE MONET – THE ROMANCE STUDIO

AUTHOR DAY – AUTHORS NAME – LIST WHERE EVENT WILL TAKE PLACE – This should be posted no MORE than Three days prior to the event. You can post it more during that time frame, but use your common sense. Twice a day for the three days prior too is more than enough to catch all the readers. Make sure you include a DIRECT LINK to whatever list you are hosting on. Also include all the relevant information such a prizes, what books you’ll be discussing and any other fun tidbit you might wish to include.

Ex: AUTHOR DAY – VIVI ANNA – ENCHANTERS LOOP

AVAILABLE NOW – AUTHOR’S NAME – BOOK TITLE Use this when you want to promote your current works. Make sure that ALL the information is in your email as well. Blurb, a DIRECT link to your buy page, a link to your Publishers website and your own website. This shouldn’t be posted more than every other day. Choose your time carefully. If you want to post in the morning, fine, but don’t post it again the next day in the evening. Wait a FULL day before posting it again. We anticipate having people constantly joining all the time, so every other day is MORE than sufficient to catch the newest readers, publishers and your fellow Authors as they join.

Ex: AVAILABLE NOW – LADY BLADE – IN THE ARMS OF A LOST LOVE

AVAILABLE NOW WITH EXCERPT – AUTHOR’S NAME – BOOK TITLE – THIS MUST BE FOLLOWED BY A CONTENT WARNING/RATING! IE: ADULT CONTENT, PG-13, RATED R and so on. Please be as SPECIFIC as possible but don’t go overboard. Also make sure you include DIRECT links to the product/website and/or Publisher. Be courteous in these postings. Once a week, twice during the day and evening is more than enough to catch all the readers.

Ex: AVAILABLE NOW WITH EXCERPT – EMY NASO – GREENE FIELDS OF SUMMER – CONTENT: RATED R

COMING SOON EXCERPT – AUTHORS NAME – BOOK TITLE – AGAIN THIS MUST BE FOLLOWED WITH A CONTENT WARNING/RATING! IE: ADULT CONTENT, PG-13, RATED R and so on. Be as SPECIFIC as possible to give your readers the option to read or delete and include DIRECT links to your website if they want more information. Be courteous in your postings of coming soon work. Don’t post something that’s not even close to being available. Authors, yes, I know we get excited about our work, but it’s not fair to tease the public for months and months while you’re waiting on edits from your publishers. If you have something that’s with your publisher but is a few months from release, then please, post a COMING SOON EXCERPT once a month. As the release date nears, weekly posts are acceptable. The week OF your release, you may post this DAILY to remind the readership it is only days away.

Ex: COMING SOON EXCERPT – MORGAN HAWKE – UNTITLED – CONTENT RATING: R

Introduction from Ayn Amorelli

Posted in Uncategorized at 8:20 pm by aynamorelli2

Hello,

I hope I’m doing this right, but somehow managed to get two blogging accounts instead of one LOL.  I’m Ayn Amorelli, whose latest book, Contract Bride, a sensual contemporary romance is published by Black Velvet Seductions.

I have 4 published books, and also write ghost stories under Ayn Hunt.  I also teach Gothic writing online for coffeehouseforwriters.com. My schedule for it is at www.authorsden.com/aynhunt.

Hubby and I live in Texas and are empty nesters. We’re expecting our second grandchild in late September or early October. My daughter and her husband live rougly a 40 minute drive away from us, which is just right, I think.

I’m an avid reader of just about everything and am currently decorating my little office in the back of our house using Feng Shui principles. Feng Shui is decorating with balance and harmony. I don’t understand all the history or other things associated with it, but know it works, from what little I’ve done so far.  Currently, I’m on the part of getting rid of clutter, which is a major tenant of it.

I was a freelancer for 25 years before I tackled writing novels while in my 50’s (I’m 60 now) and have always wanted to be a writer. I write about what interests me, and am a ‘pantzer,’ which means I’m never sure what my characters are going to do in advance. To me, that’s part of the fun of writing…being surprised.

That’s probably more than you wanted to know.

Thanks,

Ayn

Washington State Attorney General and Amazon

Posted in Amazon Sales at 2:38 pm by laurie979

For those who are following the situation with Amazon, I received the following link which provides information on the state of Washington’s investigation of claims against Amazon that relate to anti-trust issues and monopolistic practices.

http://www.atg.wa.gov/amazonpod.aspx

My guess is that nothing much will come of this particular investigation because Amazon’s reach is national (and international) as opposed to being confined to Washington state. It still may be that the Washington State attorney general will see fit to refer the matter to national organizations for investigation.

Anyway, the link is here for those who are following developments.

Currently Black Velvet Seductions is using the same printer and distribution channels that we have always used. Sales through the printer’s distribution channels are as strong, if not stronger, than they have ever been. We do not at this time see this hurting Black Velvet Seduction’s sales.

Ebooks — Kindle — How’s That Going?

Posted in Articles & Links to Industry News at 8:24 am by laurie979

Good Morning,

I thought I would pass on a link to an article (from USA TODAY) about ebooks, which I read this morning after finding the link on another group I’m on.

Article About Ebooks & Kindle — http://www.usatoday.com/tech/products/2008-04-04-kindle-ebook-market_N.htm?csp=34

There are some things that I found interesting in the article.

#1. According to the article, Kindle and the media attention it has gained since its release, has created interest in ebooks which seems to extend beyond the Kindle but also to have impact on sales of Sony ebooks.

Black Velvet Seductions does not offer either Kindle or Sony ebooks on our site, but our books are available in both formats. Fictionwise sells both Kindle and Sony versions of our books and Amazon sells Kindle versions.

#2. Interesting sales figures are cited for ebooks. According to the article, sales of ebooks have risen dramatically from about 6 million in 2002 to about 33 million in 2007. According to the article the sales figures do not include the sales of many small publishers or the purchases of many library systems which have added ebooks to their purchases.

I find this interesting as small publishers would likely include BVS as well as most of the other largely ebook publishers which publish romance. As we know from the lists we participate in, the sales figures we receive from Fictionwise and ARe, and the sales from our own site, the romance readers are big consumers of books in general. Though there has always been some resistance to ebooks for some romance readers, I see more and more romance readers turning to ebooks. For many paper still seems to be the preferred reading medium, but many are also reading ebooks, particularly in those cases where a paper version is not available.

Anyway, it was an interesting article, and one I thought authors who are published in ebook as well as paperback (as all Black Velvet Seductions authors are) would find interesting.
